Medicine Boy is a duo from Cape Town, South Africa. Influenced by the likes of Rowland S. Howard, Spiritualized, The Mary Chain and The Bad Seeds, the pair tread the fine line between the calm and the chaotic.
Formed in 2014 by André Leo (vocals/guitar), Lucy Kruger (vocals/keys) and a drum machine, the band quickly began headlining shows and festivals in South Africa and supported Allah-Las and Black Lips on their respective SA tours. They also played headline slots at Cape Town’s Endless Daze Festival (2016 + 2017) alongside Oh Sees and Moon Duo.
The band’s sound is as much about the noise as it is about the spaces between. Grinding organ sinks beneath waves of guitar that are at times gentle and drifting, at others feral and unforgiving. Lucy and Andre’s voices remain entwined and intimate.
In 2015 and 2016 Andre and Lucy took their music across the cold Atlantic Ocean and embarked on extensive tours of Europe and the UK, where they played alongside bands such as Dead Meadow, Cosmonauts and landed a slot on the 2016 Synästhesie Festival lineup, which featured The Warlocks, Michael Rother (Neu!) and more.
After independently releasing their debut EP More Knives (2014) and debut full length Kinda Like Electricity (2016), Medicine Boy has just signed to Fuzz Club records, who will release their next album in the Autumn of this year.
The band is currently based in Berlin.
